Accidentally crossed the French border on 3 April 1913 due to a navigational error in poor visibility, and landed on the parade ground at Luneville , allowing the French to examine it in detail. At this time it was commanded by oberlt. Felix Jacobi . The French released Z IV the next day.

11 August 1914 : German army airship Z IV returned to her base at Koningsberg from a successful overnight mission on the Eastern front. Under the command of Hauptmann von Quast, the Zeppelin undertook reconnaissance of the areas around Mlawa, Gumbinnen (Goesev, Russia), Insterburg, Friedland, Gerdauen and Tilsit. The mission revealed little evidence of Russian forces in or moving through the region. However, while over Mlawa, Z IV did take the opportunity to drop bombs on the Russian troops encamped there.

LZ16 bombed Warsaw on 24 September 1914. During this raid it was hit in the rear by defensive gun fire. By climbing to 2800m it escaped the shooting. During a bomb raid on the German city of Lyck, which was captured by the Russians it was hit 300 times but was able to return to its base at Allenstein (Olsztyn, North-East Poland) . Later used for training before being decommissioned in the autumn of 1916.
